R3 Spinning process Technology In the GROB spinning process, discs are formed into cup-shaped blanks, whereby a spinning mandrel forms the internal geometry of the workpiece. The spinning rollers infeed locally from the outside and form the blank onto the spinning mandrel. Typical applications The GROB spinning machine is a dedicated concept for the production of precision, light-gauge and rotationally symmetric hollow workpieces with constant or variable wall thicknesses. This machine has been designed specifically to generate preforms for the GROB T12 series cold forming machine and the i9 internal cold forming machine from round or disc-shaped blanks. Also possible is a diversity of stand-alone applications for the production of classic spun parts. Benefits Highly-dynamic machine axes and a sophisticated loading system generate extremely short cycle times. Changeover times of just a few minutes provide our customers with flexible planning potentials and just-in-time production. Stroke stamping sheet metals The GROB stroke stamping process is based on a straightforward and universally applicable principle: the total forming effort is axial to the workpiece and broken down into numerous forming increments spread along the entire cylindrical length of the zone being formed. BENEFITS - Minimal spline run-out - Affordable tooling costs - Superior spline and gear quality - Surface work-hardening - Ability to form high-strength steels - Surface finish Ra 0.4 ~ N5 - No disruption of material grain flow As mentioned earlier, the splined length is normally generated by the axial infeed of the workpiece. In certain cases, however, the entire spline length can be produced by vertical infeed towards the centreline. As its name implies, the applied process is a pure forming technique during which no swarf is generated. In contrast to other GROB spline forming processes, the tools (punches) do not rotate in a planetary motion around the roller spindle, but „stamp" the splines at a 90 degree angle to the workpiece. As there is practically no spline fillet, splining can be run very close to shoulders or steps. It is also possible to leave or form a solid ring at the end of the spline without further operations, eliminating the need to manufacture or install additional components. Benefits - Very short forming cycles - Affordable tooling costs - Superior spline and gear quality - Surface work-hardening - Ability to form high-strength steels - Compensation for the elastic recovery behaviour of the material This subdivision means that the forces needed to achieve superior forming rates and high degrees of deformation are relatively low, allowing ready-to-install precision spline geometries to be produced. As its name implies, the applied process is a pure forming technique during which no swarf is generated. Using rolling tools a blank is formed onto a roller mandrel (support die). Depending on the requirements, different process applications are employed. These include splining from cup-shaped blanks, spinning and splining from disc-shaped blanks, or direct splining from disc-shaped blanks (direct cold reduction). As a result, a diversity of profile geometries can be produced on internally and/or externally splined workpieces. S8 Slotting Machine Technology The GROB model S8 slotting machine is an extremely compact, modular design concept dedicated to the slotting, coining, trimming to length and forming of cup and ring shaped sheet-metal parts. With the mechanically defined slotting stroke of this machine, in addition to slotting and trimming, combined slotting and coining operations as are needed, for example, to produce snap ring grooves in clutch disc carriers, can be accomplished. One or more workstations The machine can be used in a single station configuration for executing individual process steps. Its modular design concept allows the machine to be configured with 2, 3 or 4 stations, perfectly matching the specific customer requirements. These multi-station configurations can carry out several process steps in parallel. The workstations are synchronised and feature internally automated loading and unloading. Typical applications This machine is the ideal solution wherever there is a need for slotting and coining operations on hollow cylindrical or splined workpieces. i9 Internal Forming Machine Technology The newly developed internal stroke-stamping process for generating splines or similar types of geometries offers engineers greater scope for breaking down current design limitations. In the design of workpieces that hitherto has been very difficult, or even impossible, as well as cost-intensive, this new machine model will establish new benchmarks. Typical applications The i9 internal cold forming machine covers a broad spectrum of potential applications. For example, the i9 can produce not only classic lightweight sheet-metal clutch plate carriers, hollow ring gears for planetary gear assemblies, but also thick-walled workpieces with internal splines. This unique machine concept allows the processing of both ring shaped workpieces, and those with closed base contours. Moreover, the i9 opens new potentials in joining technology, e.g. direct joining through forming or clinching. Benefits The use of forming technologies leads to significant savings primarily in the large-series production of automotive components. The GROB coldrolling machines are robust, and they are designed on the modular principle so as to ensure vibration damping. The roller head carrier is an over-dimensioned cast iron structure. The same applies to the rigid ribbed machine bed, which is fitted with integrally bonded, hardened and ground guideways on which the workpiece carriage is traversed. The traversing motion of the workpiece carriage is actuated via a hardened and ground recirculating roller spindle, which has a particularly high carrying capacity. All the gearwheels, roller head bodies and slides are hardened and ground.
