Drilling Eleven Hundred 0.5 mm Holes in Less Than an Hour with IPG LaserCube

Drilling small holes through thick stainless steel is always a problem. Now imagine drilling ELEVEN HUNDRED 0.5 mm holes. LaserCube easily and consistently drills clean holes with no tool breakage. An industrial machine shop job included shaping a circular part form 200 mil stainless steel, thinning a section down to 0.120" then drilling 1100 holes. By first milling the shape on a Hurco then switching to a laser for the hole drilling, they reduced the total job time by more than 2 hours compared to running on the Hurco alone. Those times ignored the additional savings from eliminating the down time due to broken drill bits, which happens sometimes with 0.020" holes. Once they discovered the benefits of having laser cutting in house, they began switching more jobs to the cutter, and doing more combination processing on both milling machines and the laser.
