Laser ablation removes thin surface layers of paint, contaminants, rust or residual materials left from previous processes. In IPG's Metrology Lab, our applications engineers use energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy to analyze parts post-processing.
In this example, the team performs an inspection of a copper alloy that had its coating removed with laser ablation. They use an X-Ray Fluorescence Gun, which provides a portable and non-disruptive test method to determine the elemental composition of a material. This technique is used to confirm whether or not the entire coating has been removed.
