ARC Specialties Maximizes Efficiency with Automated Drilling Operations

Transocean, a leading offshore drilling contractor has rig operations located in harsh environment and ultra-deep water locations across the globe. In the offshore world, Transocean was challenged to improve their operator’s drilling performance. More importantly, they needed to create a safer environment for employees working in the dangerous red zone areas of the rig. Transocean partnered with FANUC’s Authorized System Integrator ARC Specialties to design an automated solution to handle the drilling riser, which was the most labor-intensive operation. Before automation, this hazardous job required team members to carry heavy bolts and use brute force to manipulate torque wrenches for each bolt on the riser. Today, the automated system uses two FANUC’s M-900iB/280 FoundryPro robots with enhanced rigidity for applications that require ultimate precision and can withstand harsh environments. The robots are also equipped with FANUC Soft Float software and a custom torque tool which allows them to react to variances in workpiece precision and the extremely heavy torque load. In addition, iRVision® enables the robots to “see” the position of the bolts. This is the first system of its kind and has proven a huge success! It’s improved efficiency by moving Transocean’s skilled workers out of the dangerous red zone to other areas of the rig where they can perform different tasks. Another key benefit is achieving higher levels of consistency with the robotic automation without the concern for human safety.

Get it Done with Automated Material Handling of Thermoformed Food Trays

FANUC America’s Authorized System Integrator Applied Manufacturing Technologies (AMT) designed and built an automated material handling system to process thermoformed food tray parts. How it Works: Previously a manual operation, the AMT system uses FANUC robots to separate and count the trays at the trim press, erect boxes, insert bags to line cases, pack, tape, label and palletize product. Employees have been reallocated to work in other positions that require human expertise. Today, production is humming - the automation is significantly faster allowing the customer to increase production speed to keep up with market demands. FANUC’s Authorized System Integrator MSK Covertech designed and built a high-speed palletizing solution that can handle bulk or cased glass wine bottles. The system includes three FANUC M-410iC palletizing robots equipped with end-of-arm-tooling, conveyors, safety fence and cable tray. How the System Works A FANUC M-410iC robot forms layers of bulk wine bottles while another FANUC M-410iC handles three types of dunnage materials fed by an automatic shuttle/transfer car. A third FANUC palletizing robot transfers full layers of reverse tapered wine bottles, forming multi-layer stacks. In Trapo Nederland’s solution for automatically unboxing pallets of ripened cheeses, a FANUC R-2000iC/165F robot picks up the deck frame and the heavy plate from the pallets. It also places a deck frame back on the same box again, keeping the box and deck frame together. How it works: First, the FANUC robot picks the frame from the box and places it in a temporary position. Next, the robot picks up the heavy top plate and places it on a carrier within the secured area. The box is transported outside this area for a cheese inspection by an operator. If ready, it is transported within the reach of the robot. The robot places the previously removed frame back on the box; box and frame stay together. The box is transported to the unboxing unit. If the PLC signals to unbox, this is done automatically, followed by wrapping the pallet of cheeses with foil. The pallet stacker provides the box – still hanging in the unit – with an empty pallet which next goes to a separate outfeed.
