Der selbstschützende Fülldraht funktioniert so, wie eine Stabelektrode zum E-Hand-Schweißen. Bei dem Fülldraht ist außen der Schweißzusatz, in Form von einem Röhrchen und im Inneren ist das Pulver, was die Schweißnaht vor den atmosphärischen Gasen schützt.
